How to Extract Audio from a Video on iPhone for Your VDIT Project

To reuse sound from a video in your VDIT project on iPhone, open Music, choose Import File, then Extract Audio. Select the source video, tap Extract, and choose Use to add the sound to your project.

This guide covers reusing audio in a video edit. If you want a separate audio file, see the audio-only export guide linked below.

Before you start, make sure the video contains audio. Only extract sound that you created or have permission to use. Music, dialogue, and other audio in a video may be protected by copyright.

When audio extraction is useful

You might want to use a voice-over you recorded for an earlier clip with new footage. Extracting the audio lets you reuse that recording in your next VDIT project. The same approach works for an original sound effect or a short recorded line.

If you cannot hear the extracted audio

Play the source video first and check that it contains sound. VDIT’s audio extraction and saving guidelines require a video with audio. If the source plays normally but you cannot hear the sound in your project, check the current extraction guide or contact VDIT support. We have not verified app-specific fixes for this situation.

Keep copyright and file limits in mind

Extracting audio does not give you permission to reuse it. Use audio you created yourself or have permission to use. VDIT also notes that audio can be exported only from a video that contains audio.

Need a separate audio file?

Adding extracted sound to your project and saving an audio-only file are different workflows. For a separate file, follow VDIT’s How to Export Audio Only. That guide covers Save, Audio, format and bitrate settings, then Save to Files. The export workflow is not tested in this article.

To reuse audio in your next edit, download VDIT on the App Store.
